The PoC attempts to prepare the vulnerable condition by setting the MySQL session SQL mode to ANSI_QUOTES. According to the exploit logic, the affected SQL session state influences the privileged SQL operations performed internally by cPanel during database rename processing.
3. Crafted Database Rename Payload
The PayloadGenerator class creates a specially formatted database name containing SQL syntax characters. This value is supplied as the new database name during the rename operation.
The technique relies on cPanel inserting the user-controlled database name into SQL statements generated during the rename process. Under the vulnerable conditions, the crafted identifier can modify the resulting SQL statement and cause additional SQL commands to execute with elevated database privileges.
4. Exploitation Trigger
The PoC triggers exploitation by calling the rename_database API function with the crafted database name. If the target is vulnerable, SQL generated during the rename process executes with elevated database privileges.
5. Verification
The PoC verifies exploitation by checking whether the injected SQL action succeeded, including attempting to authenticate using credentials created through the injected database command.
Impact
Successful exploitation allows an authenticated cPanel user to execute SQL queries with full database administrator privileges. This enables the attacker to perform administrative database operations that would normally be prohibited for standard database users.
